We haven’t got that much sleep last couple of nights. Working at the office, checking out startups and companies, coding the voting system (thanks Arjen), not being able to reach our deadline, but now I’m happy to announce the final nominees of The Next Web Awards. In total 235 nominations were made in seven categories. Five companies per category made it to the final.
We know that there are tons of awards out there, but we try to change the rules and distinguish ourselves by NOT building up a database (we don’t want your info, so no registration needed), by NOT nominating every company out there, by NOT having 100 categories and by NOT considering all votes equal (you can empower your vote -1 vote counts for 2- if you vote in all categories).
All this combined with our endless ambition, our super partners ( TechCrunch UK, TechCrunch France, Loogic, and Frankwatching), and the drive to celebrate European startups we hope to cast even more votes then last year (85k) and distribute the traffic back to the nominees.
The award ceremony will take place on April 4, in the Transformatorhuis in Amsterdam, during The Next Web Conference. Afterwards we will have a great party at the Odeon.
Enough said. Who will own the Social space? Who’s Europe’s Web Celeb? Who’s Europe’s Rookie of the year? What European company gives you most pleasure… I mean entertainment!. What is the one European company to rule them all? Cast your vote, empower it and give your favorite service unlimited bragging rights!
The nominees are: (more…)

This is the last call for European startups and entrepreneurs to be nominated for a The Next Web Award. Already a lot of services have signed up, but we know that there are a lot more cool companies and web celebrities out there. Tomorrow we will close the database and prepare the final list of nominees.
Last year The Next Web Awards counted 85.000 votes and was already quite a success. Now we’ve teamed up with TechCrunch France, TechCrunch UK, Loogic and Frankwatching so we’re sure that Europe knows that this is the time to celebrate their internet heroes.
Nominate your favorite service now!

A lot has happened over the last few years on the web and it is not all coming from San Francisco. In Europe we have made great progress and a lot of European startups are taking the lead. With initiatives like OpenCoffee, conferences like LeWeb3, FOWA, DLD (and let’s not forget The Next Web Conference :) ) the European Internet scene is working on its come back.
We have highly skilled developers, we know how to do business, we speak multiple languages and are used to be working with different cultures (see Saul Klein’s writeup on ‘Why Europe can seed growth of its new stars’). So let’s celebrate all these great European startups!
Hold on to your braces, ’cause The Next Web Awards are coming! Together with fellow European bloggers TechCrunch France, TechCrunch UK, Loogic (Spain) and Frankwatching (Holland) we’re co-hosting these public awards for European* based technology companies for future accomplishments.
Why Europe? Next Web Blogger and of the initiators of The Next Web Conference Boris explains: “Europe has a great technology and entrepreneurial scene. A lot is happening in Europe, but most of the attention goes to Silicon Valley based companies. The Next Web Awards celebrates European startups and technology companies”.
So, I’ve made the announcement, now it’s up to you. Nominate your favorites on The Next Web Awards site before March 10. Actually, do it right away, why wait?
These are the categories:
- Entertainment
- Company
-
Social
- Web Celeb
- Weblog
- Rookie of the year
- On stage startup**
* Definition of European is in this case: all European countries according to this wikipedia page and Israel.
** 24 startups will do a 5 minute demo during the conference and they are automatically nominated for this category
As of March 11 the final nominees are announced and the website will be open for votes. The grand Award Ceremony will take place during The Next Web Conference on April 4 at 5pm.
By the way, this is the second time that The Next Web Awards are taking place. Last year 85.000 votes were counted in two weeks and amongst the proud winners were LinkedIn, OpenID, Tariq Krim, Youtube and Wikipedia.
