Yahoo OpenID just launched

Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten,
If you came here from Digg it would be great if you could actually Digg us too! Do you have a start-up that we should write about? Contact us! Thanks for visiting and hope you come back again!

The Yahoo! OpenID (beta) which was announced earlier this month has just been launched. You can try it out right away. This is expected to move the OpenID movement ahead considerably. All 250 million members of Yahoo are now able to log in to any website, not just Yahoo, that supports OpenID 2.0.
At this moment you can find very limited list at Yahoo which I hope will be expanded soon.
I have been testing OpenID login with Wordpress.com who also offers OpenID. Right now it seems Wordpress has a more attractive offer than Yahoo. At Yahoo my OpenID URL is:
https://me.yahoo.com/a/rEOH03k2oZKSWDlu_x22Z12oud0-
While at Wordpress.com it is:
I think I prefer the Wordpress version…
UPDATE: It is possible to change your Yahoo identifier URL into something more easy to remember. I overlooked this possibility when I checked the service yesterday. This means that my Yahoo identifier is now https://me.yahoo.com/openidboris. I still think http://bomega.wordpress.com is easier to remember. Thank you Adam for pointing this out to me.

The Next Web Blog is closely associated with The Next Web Conference which is held annually in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. At this event speakers from all over the world come together to talk about, and show of, the future of the Web. (

Goeie zet van Yahoo! Wel erg jammer om te zien dat Yahoo! het principe van OpenID; “een simpele URL, voor alle je logins.” Vertaald naar een onmogelijk te onthouden URL

I think you should post a retraction of your judgment of the URL you were given by Yahoo! for your OpenID. Since mine looks like this: “https://me.yahoo.com/namegoeshere”
I feel it’s not fair for you to judge Yahoo!’s offering on your inability to look RIGHT BELOW the long URL and use a customized version provided for you.

Nice.. OpenID is such a great and convenient new technology.. glad it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves. The one thing that I think still needs to be proved to the community is security. Is using one set of login crudentials secure? Will there be more robust password conventions and backup security measures?
I also love that with a few lines of code, I can make my own domain into an OpenID url.. great!

In the future the URL will actually not matter anymore because OpenID2.0 supports “directed” identity. With a directed identity I can log into a OpenID consumer with the URL yahoo.com. Yahoo (or now MS?) and the consumer will then together decide who I am, what my ACTUAL openid is (whatever long and unrememberable name) and then log me in. This kind of OpenID model is vry flexible for the simple users who dont use their own website as their OpenID.
